When we talk about "plastics" it seems that it is a single material, but there are actually many different plastics. What they have in common is that they are all plastic, which means that they are very soft and can easily change into many different shapes during the manufacturing process. Plastics (mostly) are synthetic (artificial) materials made of polymers. Polymers are long molecules composed of chains of carbon atoms, usually containing hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen that fill the space. You can think of a polymer as a large molecule, which is formed by a small molecule called a monomer repeatedly; "poly" means "multiple", so "polymer" is short for "multimonomer". If you imagine how a long coal train consists of many trucks connected together, that's what the polymer looks like. Trucks are monomers, and the entire train, made of many identical trucks, is a polymer. A coal train may have dozens of trucks, while polymers can be made from hundreds or even thousands of monomers. In other words, polymers usually have very large and heavy molecules.
