Recently, PureCycle Technologies, headquartered in Ohio, USA, announced that its flagship PP recycling and granulation facility at the Ellenton factory has produced the first batch of recycled PP particles, marking the first step towards full commercial operation of the factory.
This batch of industrial waste enables PureCycle's manufacturing team to test core technical concepts under various operating conditions. Once fully operational, the annual production capacity of the Ellenton factory is expected to reach 48550 tons, or 107 million pounds of UPR resin.
The so-called UPR (Ultra Pure Recycled) resin is a recycled particle produced from industrial waste recycling and granulation. Its raw materials include consumer packaging and other waste products sent to landfills, such as fibers in carpet fibers, film in food packaging, lining, and fragments from sports venues and event waste.PureCycle holds a global license for Procter&Gamble's patented solvent driven purification and recycling technology, which dissolves PP waste into solvents and then processes it to remove color, odor, and other impurities. The core of this process is the well-known concepts of "extraction" and "filtering".PP waste is melted in a polymer extruder and then transferred to a filter. After that, large pollutants and non molten materials are filtered out and mixed with the solvent. In further processing, PP waste is extracted and purified, and the solvent is removed for reuse until it is ready to enter the extruder and make new particles.
A huge advantage of this process is its ability to purify all different shapes, forms, and sizes of PP waste, regardless of whether it is contaminated or not. In addition, this UPR resin is easy to color and 100% recyclable. The production process is expected to use 79% less energy than producing the original PP resin, while emitting 35% less carbon emissions than the new PP manufacturing.Chief Executive Officer Dustin Olsen stated that, This is a significant achievement for all stakeholders who believe in us.
